PREPPING THE COIR – THE FOUNDATION MASH

“The base must breathe, but not drown. Feed it, fluff it, and hide your secrets in it.”
Psycho Platy

  • Coco coir is your canvas.
I overhydrate mine intentionally, then pack it into a bucket with an airtight lid like a primordial soup.
It can last up to 2 months, but let’s be honest—it’s gone before then.

  • Before using, I squeeze it to field capacity—that means no drips when squeezed hard, but still spongey and moist like the underside of a mushroom god’s tongue.

THE MIXING RITE – 5 MINUTES OF MADNESS

Spend at least 5 full minutes mixing your coir and spawn thoroughly in your tub. Don’t just toss it in. Work it. Whisper to it. Channel the network.

“This isn’t a salad—it’s a communion.”

Why? Because proper mixing:

  • Speeds up colonization

  • Prevents patchy mycelium spread

  • Promotes even canopies and gnarly flushes

PLATY’S RATIOS – THE MATH OF THE MYSTIC

  • 1:1 ratio (spawn:bulk) =
Fast colonization. Great for when you’re low on patience but high on precision.

  • 1:2 ratio =
Slower colonization, but more food = more flushes.
The tub becomes a banquet. Just make sure your spawn is strong and healthy.

“Wanna go beyond that? You better know what you’re doing, or the tub will turn on you.”

THE PSEUDO CASING – A FINAL BLESSING

After mixing, I like to lay down a thin pseudo casing layer—same coir, just gently pressed over the top.

  • Helps maintain surface moisture

  • Evens out the microclimate

  • Gives pins a uniform playground to rise from

“It’s the mushroom’s duvet. Keep ‘em tucked in ‘til they’re ready to scream.”

PLATY’S FUNK INFUSIONS – FEED THE HUNGRY GODS

Every so often, I throw extra magic into the mix:

  • Mealworm casings – protein and texture

  • Kelp powder – minerals, vitality

  • Vermiculite – extra fluff & water retention

  • Gypsum – pH balance & calcium

  • Coffee grounds – in tiny amounts for nitrogen

  • Crushed dried mushrooms – to awaken the ancestral network

Don’t overdo it. This isn’t a stew—it’s a spell.

FINAL WORDS FROM THE MUSHROOM MANIAC:

“Spawning to bulk isn’t a step. It’s a summoning.
Treat it like sorcery, not science. Mix with intention. Pack with purpose.
And when that flush hits… know you helped give birth to something divine.”
